Saturday Morning Physics 2018

Apatite formation and stability of simulated body fluids Project work (3 months)

Link: Projektarbeit bei Straumann Research 2018

Wettability of dental implants is a key surface property heavily influencing osseointegration, i.e. the integration of implants into the surrounding bone tissue. Typically, implants comprising hydrophilic surfaces show faster osseointegration as compared to their hydrophobic counterparts. Therefore, Straumann SLActive® implants are stored in saline solution in order to maintain a clean (in terms of carbon contamination layer) and thus hydrophilic implant surface and consequently SLActive® implants are known to osseointegrate fast and stable.

This project work aims to further investigate salt-based solutions for implant storage and their impact on apatite formation on the implant surface. The goal is to determine the influence of various factors on the stability of the salt solutions and the precipitation properties on the implant surface.

Flyer: SmallTalk – Nanostudents present their Field

We are happy to invite all of you to participate in SmallTalk, the first ever nano conference organised by the third year nano students! On Friday, the 5th of January 2018we are going to present our experiences and knowledge gained in the nano blockcourses. In talks of 20 minutes we will give insight into the latest research being done at the University of Basel and its partner institutions. Please find the exact schedule attached. The catering is included.

We are looking forward to all of you!

Kind regards

Talking Science Workshop

Venue: Biopark Rosental, BPR 1060, room 2.14 (2nd floor).
As part of its Equal Opportunity initiative, the NCCR MSE is organising the «Talking Science Workshop” that will be held on December 12 and 13, 2017, at the Biopark Rosental, Basel. The aim of the workshop is to train scientists to communicate their work clearly and effectively. Members of the NCCR MSE have various backgrounds – ranging from biology and chemistry to physics, computer science and engineering. The work in such an interdisciplinary research environment poses additional communication challenges for scientists, but unfortunately, science communication is usually not part of the curriculum. This workshop aims to fill this gap.

We believe that scientists have a responsibility to communicate their work clearly and precisely. Scientists should be aware of misleading simplifications and typical pitfalls, especially when talking to non-experts. In this workshop, we also discuss contemporary problems of popular science communication and provide tools to handle difficult discussions and situations.
Registration: The workshop is limited to max. 12 participants! To register, send an email as soon as possible to Ralf Stutzki: ralf.stutzki@unibas.ch. The Registration is free.
You can find more details about the workshop here: http://www.nccr-mse.ch/en/equal-opportunity/talking-science-workshop/.
